JakartaHerald.com - The United States of America (USA) destroyed an unmanned aerial system launched by the Houthi group in Yemen, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced on Wednesday.
"Between 2:00 and 2:20 am (Sanaa time) on March 27, the US Central Command successfully targeted and destroyed four remote unmanned aerial systems (UAS) launched by Iran-backed Houthi terrorists in Yemen."
"These UAS were directed towards US warships and were involved in a self-defense attack in the Red Sea," CENTCOM stated, noting that no casualties or damage were reported on US or coalition ships.
CENTCOM declared that these weapons posed a "real threat" to US Navy ships and commercial vessels in the region.
"This action was taken to protect freedom of navigation and make international waters safer for US Navy ships and commercial vessels," they added.
The Houthi group in Yemen has targeted cargo ships in the Red Sea owned or operated by Israeli companies or carrying goods to and from Israel as a show of solidarity with Palestine, which has been under attack by Israel since October 7.
The Red Sea is one of the world's busiest shipping lanes for oil and fuel transportation.
US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin recently announced the formation of a multinational mission, Operation Prosperity Guardian, to counter Houthi attacks.
